Classification of Skype et al.
Especially recently (presumably with the growth of widespread steady broadband), there has been a great flowering of these things which combine VoIP functionality and text chat functionality, most of which seem to have the baseline of functionality established by Skype along with one or two gimmiks. Most of the popular ones (at the time of writing, Discord, Telegram, and Whatsapp are popular ones) are centralized (in the same manner as Skype), but there are protocols (JINGLE and SIMPLE for two examples which each grew from pure messaging and VoIP, respectively, towards the other), which have no central authority besides a standards group, that are essentially the same. As the number of these increases, there will be new formats to catalog. My question is how these should be fit into the ontology. This wiki seems to have a precedent of keeping logfiles under the category for the thing logged (e.g. Common Log Format), something I agree with. I have put this Skype format into the VoIP category for now, largely because VoIP seems to be the more technically complex thing. But I wonder if it should be put into Category:E-Mail, newsgroups, and forums, or a new one. Effect2 (talk) 04:39, 11 April 2019 (UTC) (03:48)
