SolarCoin is another in the profusion of attempted digital currencies that sprung up in the wake of the popularity of Bitcoin. The "gimmick" of this one is that SolarCoins are issued in return for the generation of electricity by solar energy. Administering this requires human intervention to determine the authenticity of somebody's claim to have produced solar power, which means that this currency lacks the attribute (so attractive to those of a libertarian bent) of being "mined" by an automatic algorithm not requiring or permitting human intervention (with all the human error, corruption, or manipulation potential that entails).
