Discussion
The most prominent use of RES seems to be in some games developed by Sigma Team, including Alien Shooter, Theseus: Return Of The Hero, Chak's Temple, Crazy Lunch.
It was also used in the game SteamLand, credited to the companies Buka Entertainment and Gromada. (Maybe Gromada was the developer, and Buka was the publisher?)
Some of the Sigma Team executable files contain the string "Gromada". That's the only common element found so far, so it's what we're using to help name the format.
Gromada seems to be the name of both a corporate entity, and a video game developed by it. (Though the game is also said to be developed by Buka, and published by Bethesda Softworks.) The game Gromada doesn't seem to use the RES format described in this article, though it might use an older version of it.
Format details
RES is a container format similar to RIFF or IFF.
Formats
As with RIFF, the FourCC at offset 8 identifies the specific format. Known formats:
| ID | Ext. | Remarks |
|---|---|---|
DATA |
.res | File is usually named objects.res. |
MAP |
.map | |
MENU |
.men | |
VID |
.vid | At least some VID files contain graphics, but it's not clear what kind. Many VID files are small, so they probably don't contain video. |
Identification
Files start with ASCII "RES ". See the Formats section above for options for the FourCC at offset 8.
