Norton Backup is a family of backup software and services, developed mainly by Symantec. This article currently only covers some classic DOS (and maybe Windows) versions from the floppy disk era.

A version of Norton Backup was rebranded as Microsoft Backup, and included with MS-DOS 6.x. The executable file is MSBACKUP.EXE.

Format details

When backing up to a set of floppy disks, one file is written to each disk. Such files use extensions .001, .002, etc. The base filename is something unreadable like "DD41001C" or "GG41217A", presumably derived from the date, and other things.

Identification

More research may be needed. Known files start with byte 0x00, then an ASCII string that starts "NORTON Ver".
