ByteKiller (also written Byte-Killer, Byte Killer) is a file compression utility and format, mainly for Amiga.

It was originally developed by "Lord Blitter". There are a number of modified, perhaps unauthorized, versions of it made by various people.

There are a number of other compressors and formats based on it, which may have names other than "ByteKiller".

Identification

It's unknown whether there's a good way to identify most ByteKiller files, from their contents. Some derivative formats do have signatures. (Most of this information is from the Ancient software.)

  • Start of file "ACE!" = Amiga Disk Magazine Resident #1
  • Start of file "FVL0" = ANC Cruncher
  • Start of file "GR20" = GR.A.C v2.0
  • Start of file "MD10" = Amiga Disk Magazine McDisk #1, #2
  • Start of file "MD11" = Amiga Disk Magazine McDisk #3
  • ("MD12" appears on McDisk #4/#5, but it hasn't been confirmed to be a ByteKiller format.)
  • End of file "data" = ByteKiller Pro
  • End of file "JEK!" = JEK / JAM v1

Software

  • ByteKiller v1.2: [1]
