I was always under the assumption it stood for "Document" PSD (Photoshop Document files) --Thorsted (talk) 20:30, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
I don't know the answer, but even if it's "document" now, that doesn't mean it always was. "Data" is a plausible guess, since the format sort of came from the Macintosh data fork. -Jsummers (talk) 22:46, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
