TAG was a WYSIWYG word processor for DOS released first in 1989, popular in Poland and released in Polish language only, made to create documents with Polish character set (except a 1993 patched version made for Kashubian language). It allowed to create complex, hierarchical documents using various formatting styles, fonts and sizes. As the editor was available for a wide hardware range including various dot printers, it gained popularity in early 1990s. Graphics mode using VGA, CGA or Hercules boards has been used. It was made by InfoService company from Gdansk. The last version is 3.16, released in 1996. In the Polish version of Microsoft Word 6.0 for Windows, the text converter for TAG has been added. As built-in fonts could not be reproduced, the converter extracted the text instead.

Files

The software, among others, use the following file extensions:

  • TAG, BAK - documents.
  • A2T, T2A - ASCII text containing conversion tables for converting between various special character encoding standards.
  • H&E, CGA - Fonts for Hercules and EGA/VGA modes or CGA.
  • 9, 40, 24 - fonts for printer drivers.

The documents with extension .TAG are created by default in the program's installation directory. If the file has been saved, modified and re-saved again, a .BAK file is made with previous version of the document. Fonts are stored separately for screen (and various screen drivers) as well as printers. The overlay file (TAG.OVL) is used to introduce registration data to the program. Without it, the program asks user for registration name and license number. After entering these, the number is scrambled and the OVL file is generated, patching all future executions of TAG binary.
