Cartrivision
Cartrivision was an early (1972) attempt at home video, consisting of a combination TV and video tape player that was designed to play rented movies in a proprietary cassette format. Notably, the consumer devices were incapable of rewinding the tapes, enforcing that rented movies only be played once and could only be rewound at the store from which they were rented. There was also an alternate Cartrivision cassette format that could be rewound, used in purchasable tapes, which could be played on the same players but with rewinding enabled. The rewindable cassettes were black, while the non-rewindable ones were red.
Cassettes were 7 inches by 6.5 inches by 1.5 inches, and contained two reels of half inch magnetic tape mounted on top of one another. Recording capacity was 114 minutes. The recording method was based on US Patent 3,718,755, an improvement over that of US Patent 3,359,365.
