Norton Icon Editor's .NIL format is a subtype of Icon library format. It stores Windows icons, in an NE container.

Norton Icon Editor is a component of some or all versions of Norton Desktop for Windows.

Format details

(Unverified information)

NIL files are a lot like the ICL files made by Icon Manager. Most header fields are filled with 0-valued bytes.

Apparent differences:

  • The "NE" header starts at offset 64, instead of 128.
  • NIL files never have the "IM" signature.

NIL files are labeled as being for Windows (byte at offset 118 is 0x02). They are not labeled as being DLL files.
