The Unarchiver is a free application for extracting from various archive and compressed file formats. There is a GUI version for macOS only, and command line tools that are cross-platform.
The extractor command is named unar. On some GNU/Linux distributions, this can be obtained through the unar package.
The Unarchiver was fully free and open source software prior to its acquisition by MacPaw in 2017, when the license of the GUI software was changed to be more restrictive. However, the source code of the command-line utilities (unar), the decompression engine (known as XADMaster), and the UniversalDetector character set autodetection library remain licensed under the LGPL and maintained on Github.
