Thunderbird (or Mozilla Thunderbird) is Mozilla's mail program, a "sister program" of Firefox. Both Thunderbird and Firefox are descended from the original Mozilla Suite, which combined a web browser and mail/news program.
Mailboxes are stored in the mboxrd variant of the mbox format.
