We could use a separate template, or maybe a special template parameter, for unregistered types. An automatic solution would be nicer, but that's probably asking too much. [[User:Jsummers|Jsummers]] ([[User talk:Jsummers|talk]]) 21:15, 30 November 2014 (UTC)

[edit] iana.org links

It's been noted that iana.org URLs do not always correspond to the MIME type. Refer to the list at [1]. The "template" column is usually the MIME type, but sometimes it is something else (e.g. image/vnd-djvu, text/vnd-curl). In those cases, the URL with the actual MIME type might return the same document (e.g. [2] vs. [3]), or a subtly different document (e.g. [4] vs. [5]), or a placeholder document (e,g, [6] vs. [7]), or it might not work at all (e.g. [8] vs. [9]).

Should we do something about this? We could add a parameter to the template to allow the editor to manually supply the correct link when necessary. Or maybe we could find a better resource to link to. Jsummers (talk) 21:13, 30 November 2014 (UTC)

[edit] Unregistered types

This template currently causes unregistered MIME types to link to 404 Not Found pages. Should we do something about that? If we can't find a useful resource to link to, ideally it shouldn't be a link at all.

We could use a separate template, or maybe a special template parameter, for unregistered types. An automatic solution would be nicer, but that's probably asking too much. Jsummers (talk) 21:15, 30 November 2014 (UTC)

Maybe a field for alternative URL (where it defaults to using the regular one as it now does), as well as a flag field that can be set to disable linking if there isn't any URL to link to. Dan Tobias (talk) 21:47, 30 November 2014 (UTC)
