What category would tokenized BASIC programs (as stored in various types of early personal computer) fit into? Dan Tobias (talk) 21:06, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

Perhaps a new category for source code. Or perhaps serialization. Or both. Nothing really stops a format from appearing in multiple categories. Todo for the future, I have an idea about assigning a format two categories, which might be called "usage type" and "data type". Usage type might be image format, audio format, or text document format (for example MS Word doc would end up here.) Data type would be stuff like XML based format, proprietary binary, plain text, etc. I need to polish that suggestion. Anyway, I recommend a new category for source code. Specially-generated executables

I want to make an index article for certain special executable quasi-formats. It would list (or point to) self-extracting archives/installers, executable compression (obfuscation, etc.), executable documents, etc.

Question is, what do I name it? Is there a name for this concept? I might name it "Generated executables", but that seems imprecise. -Jsummers (talk) 16:33, 16 October 2021 (UTC)

Interesting question... "Quasi-executables"??? That doesn't really say what it is. Altered Executables? Mutated Executables? I don't know how to define or name this concept. Dan Tobias (talk) 17:34, 16 October 2021 (UTC)

After some thought, I've seen the word "envelope" used for this, once or twice (example). "Executable envelopes" is at least close to what I'm thinking of. Though it is slightly odd, and a web search didn't turn up much evidence for it. -Jsummers (talk) 19:46, 16 October 2021 (UTC)
