A Renoise instrument is the data giving the characteristics of a virtual musical instrument in the Renoise software. There are a number of different versions of it, created by different versions of the software.

In the XRNI format, the file is actually in ZIP format, containing an XML file (Instrument.xml) and a SampleData directory with FLAC files.

The top-level element is <RenoiseInstrument doc_version="24"> (with varying version numbers).
