GVfs (Gnome Virtual File System) was an abstraction layer providing a virtual file system for the GNOME platform, succeeding the earlier such system, GnomeVFS, which also confusingly stands for "Gnome Virtual File System". It is unrelated to the similarly named GVFS (Microsoft) used in Git.
